Unknown # 27: Arthrobacter globiformis; It’s a very interesting and frustrating bacteria. Many of our tests for this bug were negative, as it reduces extremely toxic hexavalent chromium to less toxic trivalent chromium, putting some of its’ favored menue beyond the realm of this terms’ tests’. It is a common soil bacteria that has pleomorphism-the young cells are gram-negative rods which reproduce into a characteristic ‘v’ shape, older cells change into gram positive cocciods and then to short rods, leading to some confusion. It has limited motility, and has been proven to be non-pathogenic. It is an aerobe, yet it can metabolize Nitrite, Carbon, and Chromium 6. Chromium 6 or hexavalent chromium was the toxic substance made famous by the movie ‘Erin Brokovich’. It’s is such a strong aerobe that it has 14 oxydase genes, the most discovered yet in gene mapping. It’s is such a strong aerobe that it has 14 oxydase genes, the most discovered yet in gene mapping. It also can team up with strains of Streptomyces to eat Diazinon and other pesticides and herbicides. It’s natural global enviroment is soil, the wide variety of soils making it a very adaptive critter, and difficult to identify. |
